Selling an Auto Shop or Dealership: What You Need to Know

Reading time: 10 min

The Automotive Industry's Transformation and Its Consequences

The automotive industry is at a crossroads. Electric mobility, digital service diagnostics, autonomous vehicles – everything is changing. This impacts the value of auto shops and dealerships.

For you, that means: you must position your shop or dealership for the future. A buyer will look closely: are you prepared for e-vehicles? Is your technology modern? Or are you selling a business that will be obsolete in 5 years?

Manufacturer Contracts and Binding Agreements

Many auto repair shops are bound to manufacturers (Mercedes, BMW, VW, etc.). These contracts have pros and cons. Positive: they offer security and recognition. Negative: they also mean tight control and requirements. A buyer will scrutinize these contracts and want to renegotiate. Ensure you know the contract details and that the contract is transferable to the new owner.

Equipment and Shop Infrastructure

Equipment is a major value factor. Modern diagnostic devices, lifts, paint booths – all of this is expensive and necessary. Old or outdated machinery significantly decreases value. A buyer will have to budget for costly modernization.

Particularly important: do you have high-voltage technology equipment for electric vehicles? That's the future. If not, you need to invest or lower the price.

Customer Base and Maintenance Contracts

Like HVAC businesses, recurring customer relationships are valuable. If you have regular customers coming for maintenance, that's stable revenue. Document these relationships with names, contact data, maintenance frequency, and annual earnings.

Warranty contracts are also important. If you perform warranty work for manufacturers, that's stable revenue with fixed rates.

Employees and Technician Qualifications

Good auto technicians are scarce. If you have qualified, stable employees, that's valuable. A buyer will check: who are the masters? Who's trained for electric vehicles? Who might leave?

Investment in further training pays off. If your technicians are regularly trained (e-mobility, diagnostics, new technologies), business value increases. This demonstrates forward-thinking.

Location and Space Usage

Location is crucial. Good accessibility, adequate parking, street visibility – these make a business valuable. Unfavorable locations are harder to sell and at lower prices.

VALENTYR VOS Assessment for Your Shop

For professional valuation of your auto shop or dealership, we recommend the VALENTYR VOS Assessment. The procedure systematically examines: manufacturer contracts and transferability, tool inventory and technical equipment (especially e-mobility readiness), customer base and maintenance contracts, employee qualifications and technician resources, plus location and space usage. The result is a transparent report within 8–12 weeks. Costs are around 3,500€.
